Metro Retail Stores Group Commits to Environmental Sustainability in Retail

Metro Retail Stores Group, Inc. (Stock: MRSGI) is emerging as a sustainability leader in the Philippine retail industry, demonstrating a multifaceted commitment to environmental stewardship that goes beyond mere industry trends. Leveraging solar power, energy-efficient lighting, and advanced water conservation systems, MRSGI is setting new benchmarks for sustainable operations.

Solar Power Green Transformation

MRSGI’s sustainability journey began in 2017 with solar panel installations at its Super Metro Carcar location, marking the company’s first major step towards renewable energy. Since then, MRSGI has expanded this initiative to seven more locations, including Super Metro Lapu-Lapu, Super Metro Talisay, Metro Banilad, and Super Metro Naga Camsur, bringing the company’s solar capacity to nearly 3 megawatt peak (MWp). This expansion allows MRSGI to meet roughly 15% of its total energy demand from clean sources, which helps reduce its carbon footprint by approximately 420 tons of greenhouse gases annually.

By investing in renewable energy sources, MRSGI is enhancing its environmental impact and ensuring cost-effective, long-term energy solutions. The company has also announced plans to continue expanding its solar initiatives to additional branches, furthering its dedication to sustainable retailing.

LED Lighting Energy Efficiency

Beyond solar power, MRSGI has embarked on a comprehensive LED lighting conversion across nearly 20 of its stores. This switch has generated substantial energy savings, with an estimated reduction of about 10% in overall energy consumption, amounting to approximately 830,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month. The benefits of this shift are twofold: it has not only decreased operational costs but also enhanced in-store lighting quality, leading to improved customer experiences.

LED lighting offers a practical and impactful approach to energy efficiency, with longer lifespans and reduced maintenance requirements compared to traditional lighting. MRSGI’s focus on upgrading to LED technology across its network underscores the company’s strategy of blending sustainable practices with customer-centric innovations.

Water Conservation

In addition to energy-focused initiatives, MRSGI has developed water conservation systems across select stores, such as Metro Mandaue, Super Metro Lapu-Lapu, and Metro Alabang. These systems include air handling unit (AHU) condensate recovery, cooling tower blowdown, and rainwater collection systems, designed to capture, filter, and reuse water, thus minimizing waste. Currently, these systems save roughly 1,600 cubic meters of water each month, contributing to the responsible use of natural resources.

As water scarcity becomes an increasingly critical issue, especially in urban regions, MRSGI’s initiatives highlight its foresight and responsibility in tackling this challenge. The company is actively exploring opportunities to extend water conservation systems to additional stores, further cementing its long-term environmental commitment.

A Holistic Approach and Expanding Sustainable Practices

These sustainability projects are part of a broader strategic investment of around PHP 230 million, reflecting MRSGI’s determination to incorporate environmental responsibility into every aspect of its operations. For MRSGI, sustainability is not just about adopting isolated practices; it’s an ongoing effort to transform its business model, creating value for customers while reducing its ecological footprint.

Looking ahead, MRSGI aims to continue advancing its sustainability initiatives by integrating further innovations that could redefine retail industry standards in the Philippines. Manuel Alberto, President and COO of MRSGI, emphasized the company’s commitment, stating, “Our work is driven by a relentless pursuit of excellence and a desire to make a lasting impact. We are dedicated to pushing boundaries and setting new standards in environmental stewardship.”

With 69 branches across Luzon and the Visayas, MRSGI’s efforts in solar energy, LED lighting, and water conservation set an example for the retail sector’s role in fostering a sustainable future. MRSGI’s approach goes beyond responding to regulatory pressures or consumer expectations; it represents a genuine commitment to a greener, more responsible retail experience that benefits both the environment and the communities it serves.

In embracing sustainable practices, MRSGI is redefining what it means to be a responsible retailer in the Philippines, contributing not only to the company’s growth but also to the overall sustainability of the retail industry. Through continuous innovation and environmental stewardship, MRSGI is well-positioned to lead in the pursuit of a more sustainable future.
